1. Rising: The Hall of Negro Life’ (29 mins) directed by Hollis King and Lindell Singleton, who are also involved in the Quakertown Film Project. Vicki Meek, the 2024 Director of Art, makes a notable appearance in the film.
RISING: The Hall of Negro Life is a documentary about the creation and meaning of a powerful exhibit at the 1936 Texas World’s Fair held in Dallas, TX that ignited the civil rights movement in the United States. The film uncloaks a hidden history about our collective past— never before told— making it both available and accessible to a 21st century audience.
2. ‘Steps of Faith‘ (96 mins), a film that was screened at the first DBFF in 2015. It’s directed by the award-winning Texas filmmaker M. Legend Brown and written by Michael D. Brown and T.K. Henderson. The cast includes Charles Malik Whitfield, Chrystee Pharris, and Irma P. Hall. Posters for the film are available for viewing.
Steps of Faith, is a light-hearted dramedy about Faith Houston, an accountant, who is directed by God to move to a small town to work on a Hippotherapy farm helping children. Faith is mocked by her family since she doesn’t have a rapport with children or animals and is not a devout Christian. Faith decides to follow her heart and move after she encounters several challenges. She finds herself at the farm in the horse stalls shoveling manure. Faith cracks under pressure and leaves after a child is almost injured questioning whether she heard God’s voice or not.
This is a unique opportunity for residents to bring their Quakertown photos for scanning, and rest assured, all photos will be promptly returned during the event. All donations will go towards the Quakertown Film Project. Available through Go Fund Me or check
What is the Quakertown Film Project?
Introducing a docuseries about a Texas town that thrived from Black self-sufficiency and progress for ten years- an example of the American dream was a reality for anyone willing to work for it. The people who followed every rule, obeyed every law, but still had their homes and land and hopes ripped from them.
We need your help to make this series possible.
We invite you to help us tell this story by supporting our fundraising goal for the Quakertown Film Project docuseries. With your help, we can preserve and spread the amazing story of Quakertown throughout Denton County and beyond – preserving its memory for generations to come.
The docuseries will be filmed right here in Denton County and feature never-before-seen footage. The film project will be a broadcast-quality effort to be considered for streaming platforms. Every dollar contributed will go towards sharing this unforgettable journey of resilience, strength and courage in vivid detail.
