Congrats to filmmaker Adze Ugah, recipient of a $20,000 Panavision Camera Package Award
for his DBFF 2025 Best Narrative Film Sierra’s Gold. Adze shared: “I am really grateful to

Black Butterflies – Filming in Progress
DBFF alumni Starling Thomas (Writer/Co-Director) and Jerod Couch (Co-Director/Producer)
are making strides with their upcoming project, completing four powerful filming days in
Houston and Dallas. The film amplifies the voices of justice-impacted Black women and aims to disrupt systems of silence.
Nitashia Johnson: Creative Spotlight
Shoutout to Nitashia Johnson (Visual Artist/Photographer/Filmmaker & more), whose
foundation The Smart Project recently received major support from the Pete & Thomas
Foundation (Megan Thee Stallion) and the Moody Fund for the Arts. Their mission: free
creative arts workshops for Dallas youth.
Our Movement Starts Here – Now Streaming
Winner of DBFF’s 2025 Best Documentary, Our Movement Starts Here is now streaming free.
The film tells the story of a rural North Carolina community that in 1982 launched the modern
fight against environmental racism and justice. Timely and urgent, it’s a reminder of the power of grassroots organizing.
